Research at the Australian Institute of Family Studies show, the couple married and eventually decided to split up on average after 8.7 years of married life. The longer than 7.5 years in the 1980s. The time required for couples to divorce also increased from 10.2 years to 12.3 years.

Study author, Dr Lixia Qu and Ruth Weston say this is not surprising, given the relationship without marriage is more unstable than marriage.
"Some couples living together assume a wedding rehearsal or 'warm up' before marriage. Several other live together without being married because of lack of commitment, "they said.
